The Detroit News: “Walton Goggins steals every scene as a nervous outlaw”
Metro Weekly: “Walton Goggins and the other character actors who surround Ford and Craig shine. ”
Gapers Block: “Cowboys & Aliens gets bonus coolness points for having Walton Goggins in its midst as an old acquaintance of Jake, from a time when his memory was a bit sharper.”
It’s the Ram truck counterpart to Chrysler’s Eminem commercial. The one-minute ad ties in Ram trucks with the “Code of the West”. If you’re an honorable cowboy, you should be driving a Ram.
Apparently bad guys drive Ford F-150s, including what appears to be a brief cameo by actor Walton Goggins, aka Detective Shane Vendrell from “The Shield.”
You can read the snippet below of Walton’s interview with Rosebud Magazine:
Q: You’re already wildly popular amongst fans of “The Shield.” Is it true that your character Boyd Crowder on “Justified” was brought back to life by the fans?
A: Pretty much. I had agreed to do one episode and based on the reaction of the test audiences, they didn’t want to see Boyd die. I was doing a movie while the show kept rolling and the executive producers asked me if I would stay on for a bit. We were having such a good time and the relationship between Timothy Olyphant’s character Raylan and my character became so complex and juicy and delicious that once the movie shoot was over, they asked me to come on fulltime.
And make sure to read the entire interview over at Rosebud Magazine.
During a recent exclusive interview with Collider, actor Walton Goggins talked about the appeal of playing the intriguing and often morally ambiguous Boyd Crowder, how his character is starting to find some balance from his past behavior, and how much he enjoys learning about Boyd at the same time the character is learning about himself. He also talked about his roles in the upcoming feature films Cowboys & Aliens, directed by Jon Favreau and due out in theaters on July 29th, and Straw Dogs, also starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, and Alexander Skarsgard. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Question: How did this role come about for you? Was there any hesitation in doing another television series, so close to the end of The Shield?
WALTON GOGGINS: There was a lot of hesitation, yeah. My first reaction was, “No,” first and foremost because it was so close to The Shield, and secondly because, after what the critics had done for me and the things that were said about that show, I did not want to sully that with asking people to accept me in another role, and certainly a role that could have been as controversial as Boyd [Crowder]. You don’t say those things about Jews without generating some ire. And so, therefore, I just said, “No, I’m not going to be seen in that way. These people have been too good to me.” But, we talked about it and talked about it and talked about it, and I thought, “You know, if we can do it right and you guys will let me do this role the way that I want to do it, then we may have something special and the critics may actually dig it. Just seeing something so radically different than Shane, so soon, might be a blessing and not a curse.” Continue Reading →
It’s great being a character actor. You don’t have to go through the ups and downs of an A-list star or worry about your star distinguishing and being left for dead by Hollywood. If you make a name – or face – for yourself, you just keep on working…
Walton Goggins is a great case in point. The man’s been at it since the early 90s, appearing in over 50 movies and t.v. shows. He’s mostly been a “that guy”, but now he’s turning into “ohhhh THAT guy!”, which is perhaps the highest achievement for a character actor. Most recently, he’s had big turns in the t.v. shows “The Shield” and “Justified”, and he’s soon to be seen in Fox’s PREDATORS. Slowly but surely, he’s getting out there in bigger, cooler projects.
Goggins has just nabbed another plum role, this time in Jon Favreau’s COWBOYS AND ALIENS. It’s not been revealed just what role he’ll be tackling, but my first guess would be someone shady, as is his forte. Still, being on a set with Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde (pictured below) must be so awesome, you probably wouldn’t mind being typecast. Typecasting can be a character actor’s best friend…
COWBOYS AND ALIENS opens in July 2011.
